I see these as abbreviations as they are visually shortened paintings. They begin with a general pencil sketch followed by focusing in on one area with oil paint. They echo the painting process of moving from the general to the specific as well as the the stages of building from the initial drawing to the final application of paint. I was inspired by the piles of demo paintings I have in my studio from my 40 years of  teaching. Back then I considered the demo as an incomplete painting meant for the students to follow the stages of painting a landscape. Over time I grew to appreciate the economy of revealing just the essence of the landscape. It reminded me of when I was a young student in math class being told that the "answer" was not enough and was required to follow the instructions to "show your work". These are painted on paper primed with clear gesso to maintain the archival quality. The sizes are 8.5 x 11 (except #10 & #11 which are on 8x10)
